Mandu Nkosi arranged a surprise birthday party for her father Patrick, who turned 80-years-old. She described the senior Nkosi as a devoted family man who overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to nurture and take of his family.
Mandu said of her father, “He is the reason we are the people we are today. My father is a very committed man who has always been there for his family regardless of whatever it was we were going through. He is Catholic and has always instilled in us Christian values.”
The octogenarian’s daughter added, “We decided to do this for our father because he is a very devoted man and he has always been there for us.”
Patrick Nkosi is an active member of the St Joseph Catholic Church, where he presides as a funeral and Eucharist minister.
He can often be seen driving around to the homes of elderly church congregants to offer the holy communion sacrament to those who are too ill to attend church services.
Nkosi is originally from Ladysmith in KwaZulu Natal and settled in Sophiatown before the forced removals which saw the family moving to Meadowlands.

Mandu continued, “Our father continued to further his education after he completed matric and he moved to Meadowlands with his parents in 1956 and went to work in the recording department at Dolby while he was still a very young man. He made many sacrifices to ensure that his family were well looked after and everything he does is from the bottom of his heart.”
The Nkosi clan boasts nine children, 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and the family mantra is that education is important.
A visibly surprised Patrick Nkosi said, “My children really tricked me. I really didn’t know that there was a planned surprise party, all I knew was that I would be heading to a funeral and going back home afterwards. I am really grateful for what my children did for me and I am happy that my whole family enjoyed the day with me.”
