Crime is on the increase in South Africa and as we enter the festive season, one gets the feeling that it is becoming worse.

Even paramedics who we rely on to respond to emergency situations fear for their lives when they are on duty.

Recently the Gauteng Emergency Services (EMS) ambulance crews were robbed in two separate incidents in Dobsonville and Mofolo.

EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi said that a Mofolo resident came to the Gauteng Emergency Services Base Station to request that an ambulance be dispatched.

While the ambulance was on its way, it transpired that it was directed to a false emergency incident and the paramedics were hijacked and robbed of all their belongings which included cellphones and wallets.

He said in another incident, a City of Johannesburg ambulance crew was hijacked and robbed in Cosmo City while the medics were responding to an emergency.

“This act is cruel and it also disturbs our service to the community. The medics at Cosmo City were hijacked while they were looking for a physical address of where the ambulance was requested.

“Two male suspects came from nowhere and pointed a gun at them and instructed them to get out of the ambulance and they drove off with the ambulance,” said Mulaudzi.

He said a case of hijacking was registered at the Cosmo City Police Station and the ambulance was abandoned in the city.

Mulaudzi said the attacks on the EMS employees happen on a weekly basis throughout the country.

“We cannot afford situations where we have no-go-areas as we work all over and we need the community to help us by reporting the criminals to the police because they are the ones who are going to suffer when they need EMS assistance. He urged the community to protect the EMS employees while they are on duty.”
