Nxamashe is serious about learner safety in Orlando

Lwethu Mjiyago and Thando Mabilisa enjoy helping their school mates cross the road.

A concerned citizen, Wiseman Nxamashe, volunteers to help the learners of AB Xuma Primary School to cross the busy Mooki Street in the mornings and afternoons.

Nxamashe said he started patrolling near the school because he was concerned about the safety of the children on their way to school.

“People ignore road signs and they endanger the lives of pedestrians. At first, it was about the kids only but I saw that elderly people also use the road when they go to the clinic,” said Nxamashe.

Some drivers use the street as a freeway and do not slow down when they approach the pedestrian crossing.

“They forget that this tar road is used by the community of Orlando including children, elderly and pregnant women. I am working with the school children to maintain order, this is actually part of their school activity,” he said.

Nxamashe want to reach out to the Department of Community Safety on how best they can assist him and ensure the safety of the children.

“When it’s raining I am not able to patrol because I don’t have rain coats and I get wet. My councillor has been trying to assist me in every way possible,” explained Nxamashe.

Nxamashe said he knows that there is a reward for him in heaven and other people appreciate what he is doing for the community.

“Some parents always come to me to show that they are grateful and vehicle owners give me money to buy a cold drink. I am doing this because I value children and this is my way of giving back to the community,” said Nxamashe.

Nxamashe urged residents to teach each other the road signs and how to use indication signs to cross the road.

“Drivers must know that speed kills and if you teach your kids how to cross the road at an early age they will be able to cross even when you are not present,” concluded Nxamashe.
