UPDATE: MEC Nkosi–Malobane shocked at Soweto learners tragic accident

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has expressed shock at the learner transport tragic accident that occurred in Soweto yesterday.

13 learners were critically injured and were taken to Baragwanath Hospital for medical treatment.

The MEC appeals to motorists, particularly learner transport operators, to exercise caution and making road safety a priority following a growing number of road accidents reported recently.

The driver of the learner transport was arrested and preliminary investigation suggests he was under the influence of alcohol.

“The learner transport accident that took place in Soweto is shocking, more so after a number of Learner Transport Initiatives the department undertook with transport operators and parents in recent times.

“Despite various road safety measures in place, Gauteng roads continue to experience an increasing number of fatal crashes. The safety of our passengers, especially learners within public transport system remains a priority for Law Enforcement Agencies.

“I will ensure that we intensify our road safety strategies to deal with the series of accidents in Gauteng. I wish all learners involved in the accident a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with their families,” she said.
