Chiawelo: Mother of 4 chooses ‘Holy water’ over care

A 54-year-old woman was arrested by officers from the Moroka Police Station on Tuesday for child neglect. The police were alerted by neighbours upon hearing the cries of the children locked inside her house.

The children aged 3, 9,11 months and a 6-year-old were crying before 9 am and when the police arrived at 14:30 pm they found the house locked. Upon arrival, they broke into the house and the 6-year-old was found voiceless due to excessive crying and screaming.

When asked by the police, the woman said she rushed to the church to drink her holy water only to find a long queue and could not come back home.

One of the children was found with flue and another one with a swollen red eye. Police then gave the children to social services.

We like to appeal to all foster parents to be careful when taking care of children. They must know their strength and how many children they are able to take care of them.
