Nedbank partners with Mandela Institute for Development Studies in a programme that seeks to produce young responsible African leaders

Founder of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS), Dr Nkosana Moyo shared his view on Africa stating that “Africa is facing a leadership crisis in a way that those who are in leadership are not leading efficiently. There is a crisis in a way that all the people in Africa don’t realise that we are leaders.”

Moyo was talking during a panel discussion which accompanied the launch of a partnership between Minds and Nedbank in Sandton on June 13.

This unique partnership aims to prop up the production of African leaders through African means. Through this partnership, students will be provided with scholarships to study in African universities outside their countries.

“One of the immediate goals of this programme is to create role models of a successful enterprise,” said Moyo.

“I have seen that young people learn much better and easier from each other. That is very important in the development of the African continent.”

MINDS is not only limited to developing young leaders but it extends to creating a more cohesive African continent that will be beneficial to its population.

The implications of the leadership crisis that Africa is facing are not only economical but culturally and socially as well. The continent becomes open to being bullied by the first world.

Through the MINDS programme, not only these challenges can be addressed, but the belief that an integrated African economy of global scale is a sine qua non or an essential condition for the continent’s progress to be realised.

The programme will work with about 50 universities across the continent and take between 500 and 1000 students a year.

Panelist and Mandela Rhodes fellow Nomafuze Ngcobo.
