Soweto Quartet to represent in Old Mutual joBerg 2c tour

The Soweto Quartet, which has four dedicated cyclists, will be participating in one of the flagship cycling events of the year – the Old Mutual joBerg 2c tour- to represent Soweto.

To show support The Roadcover Cycling Team, Cube Bikes SA and Old Mutual joBerg 2c assisted by sponsoring the cyclists with kits and bikes.

The handover of the cycling gear took place at Rockville. This handover also included a 15-17 km bike ride from Rockville to Enoch Sontonga Koppies in Pimville that the Soweto Quartet and some of the Roadcover Cycling Team members participated in.

The four cyclists -Bheki Mbele, Lazarus ‘Master’ Mosuwe, Calvin Mono and Ramotala ‘Ace’ Mashausane- state that they started to cycle mainly to save on transport costs and to stay fit.

“We decided to cycle because it covered a lot of our needs in terms of travelling. I used to cycle when I was farming to travel from Zola to Zuurbekom, I would carry my vegetables with a trailer using a bicycle,” said Mbele.

The Soweto Quartet were grateful to the sponsors for the generosity expressed to them.

“We are highly appreciable to all the sponsors that saw it fit to select us,” said Mono.

“As a development cyclist, I’m going to represent a new generation of cyclists in the tour. I want them to be inspired by me.

“We appreciate what we received but we don’t want this to end with us, we want it to spread to all cyclists in Soweto. Cyclists also need to support one another, we also appreciate the cyclists that are here to support us today,” said Mosuwe.

“We are also trying to introduce cycling to people in the townships, it is not just a sport for White people,” said Mashausane.

Nic White from the Roadcover Cycling Team stated that the interaction that the CEO’s company Eugene Beck, has with the different communities in last year’s joBerg 2c tour impressed him so much that he wanted to do something on the next tour.

When the Soweto Quartet initiative came up, he decided to get involved.

“It is an honour to be involved in anything that has some kind of promotion for the youth to get in sports and it’s great to collaborate with a brilliant company like Roadcover,” said Paola Chellew of Cube Bikes SA.
