Noordgesig primary gets some green help

Learners of Noordgesig Primary School were happy to get new desks.

Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) and Extrupet have contributed to the education of local children by donating 15 environmentally friendly classroom desks to Noordgesig Primary School.

The handover of the desks was made to the school by representatives of both organisations.

The donated desks are designed to accommodate 30 learners. They are made from mixed polyolefin plastics generated from PET bottle caps and labels which make them environmentally friendly.

The donation forms part of the bottling company’s vision of keeping the environment safe while contributing positively to the communities in which it operates.

Tsholofelo Mqhayi, Head of Enterprise and Community Development at CCBS said they are very committed to community development.

One of the programmes they run in communities is the school recycling programme, where schools compete with each other in recycling competitions.

“The reason for doing this is because we as a business create a lot of waste. It is fitting for us to contribute in eliminating that waste and work with our communities.

“It is also about educating the kids about waste management and keeping the environment safe,” said Mqhayi.

We looked at the needs of the schools in our programme and we saw that Noordgesig needed this infrastructure. Noordgesig Primary is one of the over 500 schools across eight provinces which are part of the programme.

Explaining the rationale behind the donation, Mqhayi spoke about the importance of having good facilities at schools, for example; desks, teaching equipment and all that is essential in improving the learning environment and access to education.

“Creating a positive and stimulating learning environment allows for learners to feel comfortable, safe and engaged something that all students deserve.

“Cultivating young minds requires a basic, learning environments wherein students feel physically, psychologically and socially secure and equipped to succeed,” said Mqhayi.
