Education campaign educates seniors about their rights

St Joseph Ithuteng campaign with Maitiso and Meadowlands Care for the Aged hosted an awareness campaign to educate the elderly about their rights at Thlokomelo Primary School.

Saint Joseph auxiliary worker Nosipho Maphumulo said that they chose to educate the elderly in support of elderly people’s month by showing them that they do care for them.

Maphumulo said that it is important for the elderly people to know about their rights because some people tend to violate them.

“Elderly people have the right to movement, they can sit and move whenever they want to and should not be forced to stay inside the house if they do not want to.

“They have the right to health, property, security, South African Social Security Service (SASSA) and to be treated with dignity.

According to Maphumulo some people take advantage of senior’s with regards to their rights by stealing their SASSA grant, while that money is supposed to help the elderly in buying food that is healthy for their well-being.

Maphumulo said that the elderly people should report anyone who violates their rights.

St Joseph Ithuteng campaign is a community based, Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) based in Meadowlands.

The campaign provides home-based care services for sick people and support for their vulnerable family members by cooking for them and cleaning their houses in order to ensure that they adhere to their treatment regimens, it also provides a residential facility, other care and support services for elderly people
